"Gokoku shrines" are Shinto shrines in which the soldiers are worshiped as kami (spirits or gods) who died in wars on the Japanese side.
Like the controversial "Yasukuni Shrine" in Tokyo, Hiroshima's "Gokoku Shrine" was built in 1868 to commemorate the victims of the Boshin War.
In 1945 it was destroyed by the atomic bomb and rebuilt in 1956 with the help of donations.
