"Otsunegoten" is the largest building on the palace grounds and was built in the Shoin style. The Irimoya-style roof (hipped roof and pitched roof) was made of layers of cypress bark and was used as the private residence of the emperor after the 16th century.

The Otsunegoten is the Imperial Residential Palace, built in 1590 to separate the Emperor's private life from the ceremonies held in the Seiryōden. As the private residence of the Emperor for centuries, this large structure contains fifteen rooms, including the sleeping chamber, and was also used for private rituals and audiences, notably holding the Sacred Sword and Jade, two of the Imperial Regalia. After the capital moved to Tokyo, the 1855 reconstructed building served as the Emperor's accommodation during visits to Kyoto.
