The history of the castle goes back to the Romans, who lived here in front of the Limes around 100 AD. built a fort.
To protect against the Hungarian horsemen who came here around 930, a fortification made of large stone blocks was built, the remains of which can still be seen today.
A moated castle in Kislau was mentioned for the first time in 1038.
Kislau Castle was then designed in 1721 by Damian Hugo von Schönborn, Prince Bishop of Speyer, as a baroque-style hunting lodge. With the secularization of church property in 1803, Kislau became part of Baden. In 1813 the palace was converted into barracks and a military hospital for the Grand Ducal Baden Corps of Invalids.

A state prison was set up here in 1824 and an internment camp for the Baden Revolution of 1848/49. Many students from Heidelberg were trapped here.
In 1933 Hitler turned it into a concentration camp for political prisoners. After the Second World War, in 1946, it was for a short time accommodation for Sudeten Germans who had been expelled from their homeland. Since 1948, the castle has been a branch of the Bruchsal prison for the “offended prison”.

Open execution has been practiced here since 1997, and since 2015 consideration has been given to building a place of learning on the history of Baden resistance and National Socialism.
