On April 12, 1814, 62 soldiers from the “Banner of the Voluntary Saxons” fighter regiment and three Miltenberg ferrymen died when the overstaffed ferry capsized. Prince Emich Carl zu Leiningen donated the tomb as a memorial (his wife was a princess of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld).

On April 12, 1814, a ferry with 76 passengers capsized near the Miltenberg Main bank at today's Gasthof zur Rose, all members of the "Banners of Voluntary Saxons" who were on their way from their home via Miltenberg to France, so Napoleon was not without she would be hit. 62 Saxons died in the flood of the Main, plus the ferrymen Franz Joseph and Lorenz Anton Wolfermann and the 16-year-old Joseph Anton Pfahl from Miltenberg.
Hardly any of the victims could swim, not the soldiers and certainly not the Miltenbergs, who were not wrongly nicknamed "the Bleiärsch".
