This is one of over 300 knight's stones of the Palatinate Forest Association.
It cannot be seen from the wide forestry path because there are some very densely grown spruce trees between it and the path. The signpost "Schanze 1" is also on a spruce tree in this dense spruce forest and is therefore (almost) useless.
A few steps further north, at the end of this small, dense spruce forest, it is easier to approach the Ritterstein, which stands on a small hill ("Schanze"), from the path.

"The redoubts near Fischbach near Kaiserslautern were built by the Prussians during the Revolutionary Wars (also called Coalition Wars, 1792-1815). They came over the Schorlenberg under the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819) and drove the French via Fischbach, Hochspeyer and Trippstadt back to Pirmasens. The battles over the Schänzel near Edenkoben, which the Schänzelturm on the Steigerkopf is a reminder of, are also known in this context."

The PWV-Ritterstein 170 commemorates the time of the Revolutionary Wars; the large number of ski jumps up here were built by the Prussians.

During our visit, the (sawn-off) part of the tree bearing the "Schanze 1" sign was lying on the ground by the path. We had to muddle through the spruce trees until we finally found it at the back on the left.
