The beguinage of Aarschot was founded in 1251. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the beguinage was severely affected by military occupations and wars. In 1543 the beguinage was almost completely destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1610-1671. In 1863, the beguinage church, the convent and the gatehouse had to make way for the construction of the street to the station. The beguinage has been protected as a monument since 1936, but it was destroyed again on 9 May 1944. . The beguinage houses between Stationsstraat and 's Hertogenmills, restored in 1999, still show the traditional Brabant brick and sandstone architecture from the 17th century with gable roofs and dormer windows.
