St Michael's was built with stone from Hadrian’s Wall some time in the 12th century. During the 14th century, fortified towers were added to the west and east of the church. St Michael's, which is Grade I-listed, retains many original features.

Worth stopping off to admire this historic gem. Built on the site of a Roman Fort, the late 12th-century church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is a fortified church standing on the line of Hadrian's Wall, and has two fortified towers (one of which has been converted into a vestry). The masonry includes sandstone from Hadrians Wall. Edward I died in Burgh by Sands in 1307, and then lay in state in the church. The church would have been a sanctuary for people and animals during Scottish raids.
