St Mary’s church was built out of stones from Hadrian’s Wall by the Normans in 1296 on the site of a turret. A notable feature of the church are two medieval grave slabs that were uncovered during restorations in the Victorian era which are built into the west wall behind the font. The church is Grade II-listed.
