The knightly noble family von Dürffenthal was first mentioned in 1307. However, their ancestors had already given the St. Martin Abbey in Cologne a tithe right. In the 14th century, those of Dürffenthals were feudal to the Counts of Jülich. A chapel is mentioned for the first time in this century and the noble family died out. At the beginning of the 15th century Daniel von und zu Berg was Lord of Dürffenthal.
