River Shuttle

The hike began at New Eltham Station, where the first stretch felt quite built up and suburban. But once we joined the River Shuttle, the route quickly became greener, quieter, and far more scenic than expected. One of the early highlights was passing Charlton Athletic Training Ground, before reaching the lovely open spaces of Avery Hill Park. The standout here was definitely the Winter Garden, which was one of the best parts of the whole walk aside from the river itself. Set beside the old Avery Hill estate, it has a really peaceful and slightly hidden feel, with ornamental planting and a lot of character. From there, the walk became even more enjoyable as we followed the River Shuttle through plenty of green spaces and peaceful riverside paths. We also took a small detour to see the confluence of the River Shuttle and the River Cray, which was a nice extra stop along the way. Near Bexley, we joined a section of the London LOOP, which added a nice long distance trail feel to the route. Our lunch stop was briefly interrupted by a sudden hailstorm, which definitely added a bit of drama to the day, but thankfully it did not last long. We finished the walk at The Albany Pub near Albany Park Station, which was the perfect way to end an excellent hike with friends.

River Shuttle

Following the River Shuttle from Eltham to Bromley. A very suburban route with occasional highlights, such as Avery Hill Winter Garden, Bexley Woods, and Hall Place. A variable Spring day, sometimes sunny, and one hail storm right as we stopped for lunch. Walked this with the group which made it more interesting.

Bedford Park to Debden

A mostly fun walk, starting on ground already knew we'll, but ending through countryside Ive only seen previously from a car on the M11, or Central line train from Epping. Bedford Park & the Redwoods remain the highlights in this area, with the rest being pleasant, if unremarkable & typically Essex countryside.

Chislehurst Caves to Sidcup

A somewhat soggy day with a late start, so I decided to head for Chislehurst Caves, which I'd not visited before & then make my way through Petts Wood & Scadbury Nature Reserve.

West Wycombe to Downley via Bradenham

I grew up here, but only experienced the countryside while on a family/school/youth club/church excursion. More recent train journeys on this line or visits to local attractions for birthdays have made me want to explore these hills on foot, and I'm so glad I've made a start. The first 2/3 of this walk are spectacular, similar to the Ridgeway, but the views aren't as obscured. It was wonderful to finally see the Mausoleum and Golden Ball up close. The walk after the Naphill bunkers was just woodland slopes, so would recommend passing back south toward the railway tracks and then either waiting for the 130 on the West Wycombe Road, or the more frequent local buses in Downley or even Sands. If I design a better route I'll link it in a description.

I propose komoot.com/tour/2799058736 as an alternative route, although untested by myself. I think the second half should take you out of miles of hilly woodland into more open country. Also finishing back on the West Wycombe Road gives options of catching the 130 bus from the main road, or walking further

Richmond & Ham House

I wanted to visit Ham House & Petersham Nurseries.so turned it into a walk. I've not been up Richmond Hill before & highly recommend giving it a go with views of the Thames, Twickenham Stadium & even out to Heathrow. Lovely day for it. Recommend Knoops hot chocolate: you choose the cocoa % out of about 15-20 choices. Also Richmond Station is beautifully restored with heritage design & worth seeing.
