Last Sunday another section of the Eulenkopfweg was due in wonderful weather. I decided again to go the opposite way as planned by SGV. The altitude profile seemed more pleasant to me. It started at the former lime kiln, which unfortunately ekes out a neglected existence. A couple of footpaths and paths then lead up to the Beek, where you have to walk for a while along a road that is fortunately not heavily used. Soon afterwards you turn into the wooded area to the west and continue uphill. At the top you follow a path a little off the road, then it goes downhill towards Aprath. Here you unfortunately have to walk a piece of the country road, sometimes with only a minimal shoulder. After turning right, it goes along the Brucher Bach through a nice piece of forest to the north, then south of the Eckbusch settlement, before turning west again onto a beautiful "Höhen" hiking trail. This leads into a great ash forest, at the end of which you can take a short rest. It continues downhill, the nearby motorway is now unfortunately noticeable acoustically. Here we come across another section of the Eulenkopfweg, past Gut Steinberg, the curve continues uphill, past hilly meadows and fields. At harvest time, it may be worth taking a detour to the nearby Faßbeck strawberry farm. Once at the top of the head, it goes south into the forest north of Krummacherstraße. At the end of the tour you come to the former Eskesberg landfill, today a fairly untouched refuge for all kinds of small animals, especially for flying insects in spring and summer. All in all, a very varied section that I liked a lot.

Last weekend I walked another section of the Eulenkopfweg, reversing the hiking direction from the original plan. Starting at the Schöller hiking car park, you walk along the still actively managed Osterholz pit, and then you get to the beautiful Osterholz forest. You can find many traces of activists and forest conservationists here, but I haven't seen anyone at the moment. In an arc it then goes over the Holthausener Heide towards Vohwinkel, and past the Simonshöfchen prison through a piece of forest that is very muddy at this time of the year. But no problem with the right shoes 😉. The path then leads in a large curve towards the B7. At this point, I advise families to follow the route described, here the children will find a playground and a wildlife enclosure. All others follow the trail markers. Then it goes to the closed pit 7, which is now a renaturation project. You continue down towards Düssel, which you follow for a while. There are many great sections here that children in particular should have fun with. At the end it goes uphill again to Gut Schöller and the starting point of the hike.

Yesterday after a long time I did a little hike again. This time it was the turn of the owl head path. This is overall longer (in the original a good 20 km), but you can walk it separately in four marked sections (in total then almost 40 km). This makes them ideal for a small spontaneous excursion. I started at the Wülfrath / Aprath S-Bahn station. The highlight of this section is without a doubt the historic center of the village of Düssel. Otherwise this section is very varied. Sometimes it goes through forests, sometimes over fields or extensive meadows. It was a lot of fun and makes you want to go to the other sections.

One of 13 tour sections around my hometown Wuppertal. The total length of the routes is approx. 104 km. With the kind permission of the Sauerland Mountain Association Dept. Wuppertal, taken from the book "Hiking in Wuppertal" (ISBN 978-3-00-064869-4).
Note: I have transferred the tours to Komoot as best I can. When in doubt, always follow the Ⓦ sign (capital W in a circle). Have fun hiking!

I went the tour today. It was a foggy, rainy day, but that too has its charm in this landscape. The beginning is promising, narrow trails, a lot of forest and small streams. A brief note, as the distance traveled deviates from the planned route: at about 2.6 kilometers the Ⓦ signs deviate from the planned route. Curiously, I followed the signs and came back to the planned route at about 4.6 km. So I can't say anything about the piece in between. However, the signs that I followed are confusing behind the Herbringhauser dam, so at some point I just went to the map. Attention: at about 4.9 km the path is blocked by private property. Unusual for a designated hiking trail, just walked over the neighboring field. Towards the end it goes towards the motorway, briefly through an industrial area, and along a main road. Little edifying, but necessary to get to the next section. More on that at a later point in time.
