Recklinghausen II Mine Headframe

Highlight • Monument

The hoistway of Shaft 4 is an impressive relic from the coal mining era. It's just always nice to come over here - but somehow it's also thoughtful.

Panorama Bridge Halde Hoheward

Highlight • Bridge

Sky Bridge also called "Panorama Bridge".
Brilliant idea to build a bridge that also serves as a platform for a great panoramic view.

In the background the STEAG thermal power plant.

Until the late 1990s, it was one of the largest mines in Germany. Today it is a future location, a place for art and culture and the largest slag heap landscape in Europe.

Horizon Observatory on Hoheward

Highlight • Monument

There is an official network of mountain bike trails on the Hoheward dump in Herten. Information and the route can be found at: landschaftspark-hoheward.de/hoheward/aktiv/mountainbike.html.

But a trip here is not only worthwhile for this 6.5-kilometer cross-country route. The heap rises more than 100 meters above the surrounding area and the paths up are correspondingly steep. From above you have a fantastic view over the Ruhr area and the southern Münsterland. There is a large sundial and the Hoheward Observatory on the plateau of the heap, which, however, has not been open to the public since shortly after it opened due to construction defects. Enduro riders are out and about on the neighboring Hoppenbruch heap.

I would never have expected something like that up here. Crazy. 💈

The sundial, which is around 3,000 square meters in size, is located on the south plateau (140 meters). A stainless steel obelisk with a height of 8.65 meters and a weight of 1.5 tons acts as a pointer. Its shadow lines make it possible to read the date and time on the circular plane with a diameter of 62 meters. 🧭

At the entrance to the Hoheward heap, you will be greeted by a dragon: its steel head rises 18 meters and the bridge railing rests against the ribs of the fire breather. 198 tons of steel are said to have gone down for the construction. A cool bridge in any case.
