Stage 4 continues on the Pennine Bridleway, which affords some of the very best riding that this area has to offer and a lot of climbing and descending! The route first circumnavigates the city of Manchester, giving spectacular views down into the valley and to the Dark Peak on the other side.
The terrain today includes some tricky rocky singletrack climbs and brilliant descents - you’ll be glad to be on a mountain bike here, or choose to take it easy on a gravel bike! There are some beautiful linking lanes and you’ll pass by numerous picturesque reservoirs that supply Manchester and the surrounding area, starting with Bottoms Reservoir and Fountain.
These spectacular trails yield views over the urban areas in the valleys and the sprawl of the city and conurbations, a real juxtaposition of wilderness and industry.
Be sure to stop in the Pantry Farm Shop and Cafe as you pass over the Rippondale Road for some refuelling! These tracks are some of the toughest along the route, so don’t underestimate how long this stage may take.
After passing the shores of Hollingworth Lake, the stage finishes near Calderbrook after summiting Stormer Hill. There are fewer accommodation options here, so you may need to make a short detour for an overnight stay.
