We rolled out later than we should have (around 11am) and paid for it. Mid-90s by the time we wrapped up, and I'm pretty sure we both picked up a mild case of heat exhaustion out there. 26 miles round trip, nothing steep ...a few short 4% pitches, but mostly gentle 1-2% grades the whole way.
Denese is riding stronger and faster than I've ever seen her. She's not the same rider she was 6 months ago.
I take hydration seriously and kept up on water fine, but calories were my mistake PB&Js for lunch just don't have the bang you need for that kind of mileage in that kind of heat. I need to figure out a real on-bike snacking strategy instead of "getting around" to it.
I also tried out a new camera setup this ride...
I strapped my phone to my forearm on a pivoting mount with a Bluetooth remote on the handlebars to trigger it...
It's seriously, THE BEST VIDEO FOOTAGE I'VE EVER GOTTEN!
It's so much easier to use than my old GoPro knockoff, and the footage shows it. Filming while actually riding instead of stopping to fiddle with a time out screen is a game changer.
it was a good ride. We paid for it the rest of the day (LOL) ... It wiped us out, and left us with no motivation that felt like the usual multi-day recovery tax I run after a big effort. Worth it though.
I must show more wisdom and:
1. Start earlier before the real heat of the day sets in.
2. Figure out an actual on-bike calorie strategy, not just sandwiches at lunch.
3. The new phone/remote camera rig is a keeper... And the Akaso is dead weight.
