My objectives for this ride:
1. Complete my Super Randonneur for the year (200, 300, 400, 600 km brevets).
2. Do a ride in a more exotic location. I'm getting pretty bored of riding Lougheed Highway to/from Hope, and around the Fraser Valley farmland. The Cache Creek 600 would have been a repeat of my recent Canyon des Lacs 1000. Valemount delivered the breathtaking panoramas that make you happy to be alive to witness.
3. Do some reconnaissance for a future ride. 😉
4. Try out a new sleeping setup. It kind of worked, but needs refinement. I woke up from being too cold. Two hours of sleep was not enough to prevent a miserable sudden-onset sleep bonk at 5 am.
The outbound 300 km went really well: just 12.5 hours, mostly uphill with a slight headwind. The resulting time, 32h10m, sets a new personal best time for a 600 km brevet. But there's no good reason that the mostly downhill return should have taken so long, when those final 19 hours included only 3 hours of sleep. The last 150 km involved too much suffering and poor performance, so I'm going to have to find some better sleep strategies. It certainly didn't help that I only got three hours of sleep before the 5 am start time, and I even lost 8 minutes right at the start because I was still frantically eating, setting up my bike bags and accessories, and applying sunscreen.
