🥾 Day 5 of the Hexatrek 🥾
La Petite Pierre ➡️ Saverne
Today we walked into our rest day - a whole day earlier than anticipated! After a strong first few days on trail, we've somehow found ourselves ahead of schedule, which means a full day tomorrow to relax, recharge and explore Saverne properly.
One thing was noticeably missing today: castles! After days of hopping between fortress ruins and dramatic viewpoints, today's route was mostly forest tracks winding through the Vosges. Not the most exciting day scenery-wise, but sometimes that's just part of long-distance hiking. You put your head down, keep moving forward, and enjoy the rhythm of the trail.
The highlight came just before Saverne at Prince Charles Rock (Saut du Prince Charles). According to local legend, a Duke of Lorraine named Charles was being pursued by enemies and escaped by launching himself and his horse off the rock face. Miraculously, both survived, and it's said that the horse's hoofprints can still be seen in the stone below. The site also overlooks an ancient route through the Saverne Pass that has been used since Roman times. A pretty cool bit of history to come across near the end of the day.
And with that, the first week of the Hexatrek is complete!
Five days down, plenty of miles in the legs, and we're feeling stronger with every step.
Tomorrow: no hiking boots, no pack, and hopefully plenty of good food!
