My sixth training walk for the 100km Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge in mid-May 2026.
Gorgeous day for it: wall-to-wall sunshine, nice temperature, refreshing breeze … wonderful.
This was my main distance-training walk, but it's Bath, so there were still hills, of course! 😉
I first did this walk back in 2023, while preparing for London to Brighton. I'd forgotten so much of it (understandable over 21 miles): the really steep climb near the start with a stream running down it even during a prolonged dry spell - it's a hill that makes Solsbury Hill seem easy; the 27% gradient plunge back down afterwards; the bit where you legitimately walk through someone's back garden (at least the homeowner wasn't outside in it this time); walking under the A46 dual carriageway; walking over the A4 dual carriageway and railway line running parallel to it; people playing lawn bowls; people playing cricket; people playing some game I couldn't decipher at a quick glance. 🤷🏻 No scary cows near the end like last time, thankfully. 😬 Though one did fart somewhat pungently as I passed earlier on. 🤢
Happy with my pace: 17 minutes faster than last time (despite somehow covering 0.3 miles more - 🤷🏻), and 0.2 mph faster on average, with fewer/shorter stops along the way. 👍🏻
And Komoot came up trumps with the pinpointing of a water tap I could use at around the halfway point! Very much needed! 🥵
