Rastkogel Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Rastkogelhütte in the Zillertal Alps is a hut of the German Alpine Club. From Hochfügen you can reach it on a simple mountain hike. Day hikers come here to enjoy the tasty meals. For ambitious summiteers, it continues from here to numerous peaks of the Zillertal Alps. In the first place of course is the eponymous Rastkogel, but also the Roßkopf, the Kleine Gilfert and the Marchkopf are popular summit destinations.

The hut is open in winter from early December to Easter, and in summer from early June to late October.

The starting point was the Melchboden hiking car park on the Zillertaler Höhenstraße at an altitude of 2000m. We followed easy paths to the Arbiskopf 2133m and from there to the Rauhenkopf 2268m. After a short break, we hiked in good spirits to the Mitterwandskopf 2280m. With the Rastkogelhütte in sight, the Kreuzjoch 2338m was no longer a problem. After …

One item on my bucket list: experience the sunrise on a peak! ⛰️😍 And it was clear to me that if the weather permitted, I would climb one of the mountains here in the Zillertal in the dark and experience the bright red sun rising on the horizon. ☀️🔥

Today was good hiking weather at the top - on the ascent to the Kreuzjoch everything was in the sun, then fortunately mostly under shady clouds. Overall, another very nice round from Melchboden at an altitude of 2000 m.
Over the ridge, we climbed straight up to the Arbiskopf (2133 m) and continued on the ridge over a few smaller …

Moderately difficult panoramic hike on mostly grassy terrain with fantastic views of the main Alpine ridge and the Hochzillertal.
The Kreuzjoch Melchboden section with a lot of oncoming traffic from the Tux70 runners who started at 5:30 a.m. today. Respect, respect.

The goal today was to go hiking again before the rain was forecast. So we went up the Zillertal high road to Melchboden. From there over Rauhenkopf and Mitterwandskopf to the Rastkogelhütte. You could already see the clouds gathering. So after eating delicious Kaiserschmarrn and wild garlic pesto with homemade pasta, we went straight back. Shortly after we got in …

Today (Sun. 08.09.) we should be at an altitude of over 2000 m again, because the announced change in the weather from this evening will probably no longer allow these altitudes on this holiday. So we drove the narrow Zillertal high road from Hippach to Kaltenbach by car and then did a circular hike from the highest point. From the …

An entertaining hike with always new wonderful views and colors. A branch to the Kreuzjoch summit cross needs to be carefully considered. Black hiking route! Unfortunately, we had to bypass this section.
I would do this hike a second time.
