Nachtigall Bridge with a view of the Ruhr

Around 1850, the Nachtigall colliery built a railway bridge to overcome the Ruhr, via which the coal mined in the coal mine could be transported by horse train to the Witten train station. Here you had therefore connection to the 1848 opened railway.

After the decommissioning of the colliery Nachtigall 1892, the bridge was only used by pedestrians and wagons. In 1938, the now dilapidated bridge was demolished. Since 1988, there is again a nightingale bridge, which allows pedestrians to cross the Ruhr here.

On the northern bank of the bridge was until 1813 the lock Steinhausen, of which today, however, no visible traces are preserved.
