Long promenade. Towards the east to the outskirts of the city. Near the old harbor there are many restaurants and cafés right by the sea. Ideal for ending a stroll through the city 🤩

Ierapetra (Greek: Ιεράπετρα [ieˈɾapetɾa] (f. sg.)) is a town in the southeast of the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete and the administrative center of the municipality of the same name (Greek: Δημος Dimos [ˈðimɔs]). It is the southernmost town in Europe (excluding Cyprus, which geographically belongs to Asia). Ierapetra lies at the narrowest point of Crete: from the south to the north coast, it is only 12 kilometers as the crow flies.

Venetian Fortress

Highlight • Castle

Kales Fortress was built by the Venetians in the 13th century AD to protect the city of Ierapetra from their enemies. It was destroyed in 1508 by an earthquake and Turkish raids. The damage was never repaired, perhaps because it was so severe and there was no funding available.

After a circular hike around the Bramnia Reservoir, there was a walk through Ierapetra. With its approximately 12,000 inhabitants, the city is the fourth largest in Crete. The special thing, however, is: Ierapetra is the southernmost city in Europe.
The promenade, some churches and the Venetian palace are the highlights. The Napoleon house is more of a "lowlight".

After the Bramiana reservoir, we continued to Ireapedra. A short walk along the waterfront promenade and through the town. Unfortunately, the fort is only open until 3 p.m., so we went to the artificial canal and the lake. It's actually a beautiful area, but it seems unused and forgotten.

After 1985 and 1987, this is my third time in Ierapetra, which is said to be the southernmost city, at least in Greece. My exploration today was walking on old memory paths. I could recognize prominent points. Other blurred. Overall, the city looks tidier, more prosperous and "European" today. Some corners were picturesque as they once were. Have a nice …
