A very special highlight in the Harz is the old Brocken Railway, which has been running regularly up the highest mountain in the Harz since 1992. This is a so-called "adhesion railway": despite the steep route profile, the railway climbs the summit solely due to the friction between the drive wheels and the rails and does not require any gears or anything similar. This means that the route has the highest station of all German adhesion narrow-gauge railways.

Enough of the technical highlights. Purely from an experience point of view, a train journey like this is of course extremely exciting. If you still prefer to climb to the Brocken by bike, I fully understand. But maybe the Brocken Railway is an option for the rest of the family? Take a look here, there is all the information about the railway: hsb-wr.de/mehr-erfahren/streckennetz/brockenbahn.

Brocken Railway Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The HSB (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) have parked a (red) tank car with extinguishing water on the Brocken for possible accidents. The wagon stands on a trolley, in winter it goes into the valley.
This tank car was only in Drei Annen Hohne and was subsequently marked by the HSB.
It is used solely for the extinguishing agent reserve and is shut down again in winter.

Brocken Summit

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak in the Harz above the tree line. Certainly not the most exciting climb on a mountain bike, but still a must, simply because it's there. ;-)

May 22, 2023,Tour Teil 2 Talfahrt vom Brocken nach Wernigerode
Despite the wonderful weather, there were actually relatively few people up there. There was no train in sight for a long time. Then he was there and the fair-weather tourists flooded the area. Now it was time to leave the village and start the descent. Out of consideration for the hikers, free driving was not possible up to the junction …

Today was another great tour, I trained a lot this month to be fit for the bump, did 1000km this month, Dominik only started riding his bike 4 weeks ago, but he did well too, I thought he couldn't do it because he didn't train that much, but with a lot of will he didn't give up and made it, …

August 31, 2021,Brocken Tour
With only one month of training, I took on these challenges together with Jochen. And we were successful, we conquered the Brocken with the distance and got back alive.
Even if I've pushed my limits here and my legs are hurting now, there are still great goals to set. For example, high kilometers. It was really nice and a good …

Accompanied the night riders for a bit on the road bike ride. And while you're in Schierke, you can also take a quick climb to the Brocken. Due to a lack of local knowledge, there aren't many trails going down. Still, it was a cool route.

5.30 a.m. Open your eyes, what can you do? chunk? 06.30 a.m. Start towards Schierke. Start in Schierke around 8.30 a.m. Well then arrived in peace and with photos from the road with little visibility. Departure via Brockenstr., Glashüttenweg with trail, past the Trudenstein to the Ottofelsen. What sunshine 😃. Then continue via Drei Annen Hohne station, stopover with bratwursr …

And once again we started to have fun. 😁 The path is the goal and therefore it didn't matter which path was given to us by weather, trees, mud, ice or snow. My seat post didn't want to stay up, so I strove towards the summit like I was on a kid's bike. So we made it to the Brocken …

It's great that we managed to meet up again this year.
