The Golden Gate (Złota Brama), Gdańsk

Highlight • Monument

"The Golden Gate (Polish: Złota Brama; German: Langgasser Tor) in Gdańsk (former German name: Danzig), Poland, is one of the most notable tourist attractions of the city.

It was created in 1612–14 in place of a 13th-century gothic gate, the Brama Długouliczna (Long Street Gate). It is located at one end of Long Lane (ulica Długa; German: Langgasse), where, together with Brama Wyżynna (German: Hohes Tor = High Gate) and Wieża Więzienna (German: Stockturm = Prison Tower), it forms a part of the old city fortifications." As part of the revitalization of the historic Granary Island (Wyspa Spichrzów) in Gdańsk, a new pedestrian bridge over the Motława River will open at the end of July. The swing bridge connects Granary Island with the Long Bridge, the waterfront promenade of the historic Old Town.

The 57-meter-long and 4.5-meter-wide structure provides access to the northern part of the island, whose buildings were almost completely destroyed during World War II. New housing developments and hotels have been under construction there for several years. Plans also include the modernization and expansion of the adjacent Marina Gdańsk. In addition, the former Milk Can Bridge (most Stągiewny) is to be restored to its pre-World War II appearance. Until its destruction, it served as a drawbridge directly in front of the Milk Can Gate. The two bastions of the Milk Can Gate, which were also destroyed, were rebuilt in the 1980s.

Milchkannentor (Stągiewna Gate)

Highlight • Monument

The Milk Can Gate is a city gate on the Gdańsk Reservoir Island. The round bastions were built in the 15th century. The higher bastion is 28 m high, 13 m long, and its walls are 4 m thick. It is covered with a conical tiled roof. The lower bastion is only 10 m high and 8 m wide. It is covered with a flat pent roof. The towers were damaged in World War II. The Gdansk artist cooperative “Arpo” rebuilt it in the 1980s. At that time the towers were connected with a wooden gallery.

The Town Hall (Polish: Ratusz Głównego Miasta) is located in Gdańsk in the district of law city. This is the actual city center and older than the Gdańsk Old Town with the Old Town Hall. Located at the end of the Langgasse, the town hall has also a dominant position on the Long Market.

Gdansk surprised me positively and is definitely a highlight. The ascent of the tower of the Marienkirche is a must, because from up here you have a great overview of the city. The World War II Museum is also worth a visit. A boat trip to Westerplatte should also be included, including harbor tour.

Coming from Warsaw via Toruń, we didn't arrive in Gdansk until the evening – but curiosity got the better of us.
The faithfully rebuilt city center is simply stunning! It was an absolute "wow" moment for both of us, and the setting sun was a dream – both along the Motlawa River, at the Long Market, and in Mariacka Street …

A day in Gdansk. First, we took a guided tour, then strolled through the city, admiring the historic, largely reconstructed buildings as well as the gabled houses added in a modern style.

A walk through the atmospheric streets of Old Gdańsk under the full moon. Along the way, you can meet people encouraging you to use the restaurants.

For the first time in my mother's birthplace.
A very nice city. And to explain: The small terraces in front of the houses called Beischläge served the merchants as a dining area. Here one showed one's wealth with the well-filled panels.

A lovely tour of Gdansk, including a moving visit to the Second World War Museum. A very captivating exhibition that takes some time to absorb.
