Tunnel on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

Currently, the last tunnel sections on this fantastic railway cycle path.
I've now also ridden the "newest" section to Carnia in September 2025. 👍🙏🚲🌝

Crossing a bridge over a river by bike always has something mystical about it, especially if the bridge has a clear historical connotation as in this case.

22 tunnels and several bridges are an experience, as well as mountain scenery and rivers.

Beautiful route. Unfortunately, about 10km before Venzone the old cycle path is buried and you have to switch to the busy road.

Great old railway bridge. And here again the fine grid floor with a view!

A dream of a railway cycle path downhill.
Tunnels, bridges, nice cafes, great scenery.
Unfortunately not all tunnels can be used and there are still about 6 km of cycle paths to go to the next town, Carnia.
New tunnels have been added at Pontebba since June 2020.
In 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2020 I cycled the railway line and repeatedly experienced expansion stages.

I drove it away from Tarvisio to Venzone 2 years ago with work colleagues! Dream day and, as I said, quite fresh in the tunnel! Stopping at the old train station in Malborghet is recommended, as you can see and marvel at the characteristic style buildings of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy!
A stop can also be recommended in the former Chiusaforte train station!
If you drive there from Austria, you can take the MICOTRA train back to Villach in the evening! Timetable can be seen on the ÖBB website!

Riding through this beautiful region with like-minded people 🚴🚴 is truly a lot of fun 💪💪🦾.
Great weather ☀️, nice people, good food 🍺🥐🥗, and quite a few meters of elevation.
Enough for today 😁

Fantastic stage of the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path! Unbeatable!

A magnificent cycle path in northeastern Italy on a former railway line. Approximately 50 km from Carnia to Tarvisio have now been completed and paved. Magnificent scenery, countless bridges, and tunnels.

Today was a chill-out tour in preparation for the weekend.

But first, an addendum to Pontebba: the column with the reference to Carinthia refers to the fact that the front ran at this point in World War I - right next to the bridge on which this column was erected. In the town hall there should be a special exhibition …

From Villach you can take the "Radl-Zug".
From there it goes downhill. Depending on ability, desire and weather, it is between approx. 30-100 km that are then covered. At around 6:30 p.m. the train goes back and an hour later you get off in Villach.
The return of the bikes (if borrowed) usually still works.

At night the rain fills the water reservoirs! In the morning it is still pouring and everything is covered in gray.
We have a leisurely breakfast and set off at 11 in full rain gear with still light rain.

It goes through many tunnels and many bridges lead over the brown, raging Fella.

Only downhill but I had to keep stopping to take pictures. As it should be, we stopped in Chiusaforte at noon.
After more tunnels, all of which were illuminated, the bike path ended and we had to drive on the road.😟

Escape from the heatwave. Evening/night from Ugovizza to Carnia. In the longest (and coldest) tunnel between Resiutta and Moggio we also found fog ❄️⛄️ With aperitif at closed station and chicken with potatoes in Resiutta 😋
