Trabocco Cungarelle

Highlight • Structure

The trabocco or travocco is an imposing construction made of Aleppo pine wood typical of the areas of the middle Adriatic, moldable, capable of withstanding the saltiness and the strong gusts of the mistral that beat the Adriatic. Consisting of a platform jutting out into the sea anchored to the rock by large trunks from which two or more long arms, called antennas, stretch out, suspended a few meters from the water, which support a huge tight-meshed network: the "balance". The different characterization of the coastline has defined the distinction of different typologies: this one, the Abruzzo one, is distinguished precisely by being positioned transversely with respect to the coast to which it is connected by walkways.

This stretch of the Adriatic coast of Vasto Marina is very important for the development of the future cycle/pedestrian path Via Verde Costa dei Trabocchi, in the 5.5 km stretch that connects the entrance to the Vignola beach to the former Vasto railway station marina in Piazza Fiume.
The stretch I recorded is 1.21 km from Vignola to the first arch of Canale beach, but since it is now closed to the public, it is impossible to pass through, so I expect the Province of Chieti to make the tunnels safe to then be able to map the entire 5.5 km stretch.

Station in disuse since 2005, today it is a parking lot. Too bad for the state of abandonment, it would be nice to recover it to guarantee a foothold for passing cyclists.

Via Verde dei Trabocchi – Cycling on the most beautiful balcony of the Adriatic Sea.

If there is one cycling route you must ride in your life, it is the Via Verde dei Trabocchi.

This breathtaking cycle path, over 50 kilometers long, is built on the spectacular route of a former railway line, right along the rugged coast of the Italian region of Abruzzo. Because the route is never steep and is completely car-free, it offers pure, carefree enjoyment for every type of cyclist.
You are literally cycling just a stone's throw from the lapping water.
Historic, cool railway tunnels, hidden pebble coves (calette), and idyllic little harbors alternate at an incredible pace.

The absolute stars of the route are the iconic trabocchi: monumental, centuries-old wooden fishing platforms on stilts that float like giant spiders above the turquoise sea. Once a clever invention of local fishermen, today they are the most unique seafood restaurants you will ever see.

It's a popular cycle path and it would be inadvisable to whiz around at 40 km/h on a racing bike. Pedaling accompanied by the smell of pine trees and the scent of the sea is a far greater emotion than monitoring your average speed on your bike's GPS. Enjoy it!

This path feels like a little green oasis away from cars and pollution. The only sound you can hear (on a low season period) is the waves lapping .
One only tip : Keep your eyes open, you will be surprised from the amount of beauty you will encounter in this place.

wheelchair accessable, cemented path, easy walking and riding .
