Janubio Salt Flats

Highlight • Structure

These salt flats in the municipality of Yaiza are the largest in Tenerife and are still active thanks to the fact that the European Union has protected them and that the government considers them an area of scientific interest.

Straight road between Playa Blanca and Janubio

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very little traffic as it is next to the main road. Endlessly long straight sections. Definitely recommendable.

On the journey to Playa Blanca, I was accompanied from Yaiza by Annabella from Kelsterbach. She wanted to do a circular route and gave me the tip that there was a turnoff to Yaiza before the section of road to Femés that was closed to cyclists. I then took this route. First, however, I tried to find my old hotel …

Today's tour went completely different than planned. Starting from Puerto Calero, it should go via Yaiza and Salinas de Janubio - past seemingly endless lava fields - to El Golfino on the Atlantic Ocean. But it didn’t work because the road there had sagged and is therefore closed. So we made a new plan ... to Playa Blanca ... so …

Very nice tour with a view of the sea and on the way back a panoramic view of the Fire Mountains. The road towards Femes is very rough and the cars are a bit annoying, but the view of the Fire Mountains from Brenjas to Yaiza is magnificent 😍

The loop has a few special features. The southern view of El Golfo is very easy to reach for cyclists, unlike car drivers, and isn't as crowded as the "traditional" viewpoint.

The forbidden road is officially closed. However, I was tipped off that it's open to cyclists, and I wasn't disappointed, as you practically have the coastal road to yourself.

Nice tour of the island mid-east side with 1100 alt.meters. Just a small section on light gravel to avoid the main road.
The ferry ⛴ from Playa Blanca, the southern tip of Lanzarote, takes you to Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura 🏝

Very nice road between Saline and Playa Blanca. But you have a headwind at least once when you go there and back 🚴🏼‍♂️🎏😁
