Great Secker Pond

Highlight • Lake

The big and the small pond are separated by a dam. The ponds were commissioned in 1672 by Prince Moritz Heinrich of Nassau-Hadamar to secure the supply of fish during the Lent. Today you will find here a quiet and beautiful recreational area with a campsite and gastronomy.

Great tour even with a bit worse weather. Finally, a visit to the nearby cafe worthwhile, but you should inform yourself in advance about the opening times

Holzbach Gorge

Highlight • Bridge

Very beautiful hiking trail along the Holzbach. Especially in summer when it's hot, it's still very pleasant and refreshing because of the dense foliage of the trees and the proximity to the stream. Bicycles and horses are not allowed on the narrow but easily accessible paths, so you can relax and unwind. Due to its length and the rest areas where you can dip your feet in the cool water, it's also very suitable for families with small children. Everything can be rounded off with ice cream, coffee and cake at the nearby Dappricher Hof.

Another micro-adventure: I found this tour on the NaturAktivErleben website. The tour follows the Westerwaldsteig (stage 4) and was quite varied. We started at the dried-up Wiessee as a circular tour...luckily the weather was better than expected.

Deviating from the actual route, I did not hike through Gemünden and instead followed the Westerwaldsteig around Gemünden.

Oh you beautiful Westerwald.😚🐦
I could chirp with the birds today. Starting with the Holzbachschlucht gorge, the Westerwaldsteig offered me a varied hike on the section I had made.
Due to a technical defect, there is very little water in the Wiesensee. So leave your surfboard or boat at home 😉.
You can swim in the large Secker pond. 🧜‍♂️

On the second day in the Westerwald we hiked the “Green Trail and Lake Trail” adventure loop. The hike through the Holzbachschlucht is particularly beautiful on this tour. A really nice section that you shouldn't miss. But the rest of the tour was also very nice.

Have fun hiking!

Today I was able to go out again with the hiking group, which was formed by former colleagues from the district administration. The original plan was to take the "Monrealer Ritterschlag" route.
The information that the route is currently closed due to necessary repair work following vandalism made us choose a different tour at short notice.

New seasonal peak values for daytime temperatures are reported for the next few days. So this morning I thought I'd do this long tour straight away.

I set off from Westerburg train station to walk along the Westerwaldsteig to the Holzbachdurchbruch. I can also highly recommend this section of the trail. Mostly it leads along narrow paths through the shady …

Yet another path on the edge of the WesterwaldSteig.
For the 15th anniversary, I picked out a small round from the portal mentioned above and drove to Stahlhofen am Wiesensee.
Admittedly, I already know the region and have already walked many paths, but it is always a pleasure to walk through the Westerwald.
