Ithwiesen Glider Airfield

Highlight • Structure

Once you've climbed through the forest, a completely different landscape opens up on the Ith ridge! The expansive Ith meadows with the airfield offer panoramic views and, of course, something to look at during flight operations. ☺️

From this path to the glider airfield on the Ith you have a wonderful view of the wide open country and the Hils opposite.

Lüerdissen Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

One bizarre rock formation follows the next in the Lüerdissen cliffs. No wonder the area is so popular with rock climbers. The Ith-Hils-Weg runs above the cliffs on the ridge, just below the upper cliff path and finally below the rocks the lower cliff path - if you want to explore the area extensively, take some time and do a little round here.

Please note that some of the rock heads are closed. Stepping on these cliffs is therefore not permitted for reasons of nature conservation. The closures are usually signposted. Please stay on the paths and only use designated stairs between the cliffs in order to preserve the area sustainably and prevent rock erosion.

Ithwiesen Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

It makes me happy that such seemingly untouched mountain meadows still exist in our part of the world. It's all the more important that they are protected and preserved. In addition to the diverse flora and fauna, you can also enjoy magnificent views of rolling hills and isolated trees here.

The anticipation was already as great as it should have lasted - a full three months since our last Ith hike. And now, on the really last free day, almost on the very last half groove, the Ith gives us plenty of sun, its cave adventures, last climbing athletes, anyway exclusively narrow paths along the Holzener and Lüerdissener cliffs and …

Today we partially followed the Ith Hills Trail to stamp points 16 and 17. We started below the gliding airfield and stamped our first stamp after just a few hundred meters. Continuing through the gliding airfield, we walked along beautiful nature trails toward Rothesteinmühle. To avoid disturbing the bats there, we didn't go all the way, and the preceding rocks …

This section of the Ith-Hill trail leads to the Rothenstein cave, which is also accessible from May to October, the other time it is closed off by a grid to protect the bats. The ascent to the cave is a bit steep but doable. In the cave itself you can only get in with a flashlight, there should also be …

We started at the Holzen hiking car park. Climbers were already busy there. We climbed up to the Ithwiesen meadows. The ridge path is highly recommended. Interesting cliffs can be seen there. Despite the great weather, the trail was relatively uncrowded.

The ridge path is highly recommended.
