The gate was built in the 15th century. The brick gatehouse has four corner towers. The domed turret was renovated in 1858. Housed in it is the oldest carillon in the Netherlands (1554), from the old town hall.

The Zeeland Bridge has connected Schouwen-Duiveland (Zierikzee) and Noord-Beveland (Colijnsplaat) since 15 December 1965. The Zeeland Bridge replaced the Zierikzee-Kats ferry connection and is over five kilometres long.

From longest bridge in Europe to national monument
The Zeeland Bridge is an impressive structure of approximately five kilometres long. When it was opened by Queen Juliana on 15 December 1965, it was the longest bridge in Europe. This is no longer the case, but the Zeeland Bridge was designated a national monument by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands on 15 December 2015.

In 1971, the Grevelingenmeer with a surface area of 14,000 hectares was created by damming. In the past, the Grevelingen was mainly important for oyster and mussel farming. Now this salty lake is an attractive area for water sports. In addition, nature receives a lot of attention. For the benefit of pleasure craft, the Mosselbank has been located on the plate directly in front of the water sports island since 1990. On the other side is Herkingen on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee.

In your field of vision on the right you can see the Grevelingendam. It is one of the most important connections between Schouwen-Duiveland and the mainland. As part of the Delta Plan, this dam was built between Bruinisse and Goeree-Overflakkee in 1961-1965. The northern channel, the Bocht van Sint Jacob, was closed off by dumping a dam of stones using a cable car. On 1 April 1965, the Grevelingendam was opened to traffic.

Dijkwater Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

From the dike, a view of the mudflats of the Dijkwater nature reserve in the municipality of Sirjansland. In 1305, an area reclaimed ('s heers Jans land) where a channel (Dijkwater) provided access to 4 harbour towns. The Dijkwater is the historical remnant of the Gouwe, which separated the islands of Schouwen, Dreischor and Duiveland. In 1374, the northern branch of the Gouwe was dammed and the Noordgouwe polder was created. In 1610, Schouwen and Duiveland were also effectively connected. During the major flood disaster in 1953, the inlet of the Dijkwater was one of the places where a major dike breach occurred. After the flood disaster, the area was reclaimed and a nature reserve was created where numerous water birds can be spotted.

We really enjoyed our tour from Dreischor. 🥰

Dreischor on Schouwen-Duiveland is one of the best preserved of the 15 ring villages in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The village has around 1,000 inhabitants. The village view is a listed building and the oldest mention of the place dates back to 1206.

Dreischor also has a winery

Cycle tour from Bruinisse to Zierikzee
On a beautiful and sunny Sunday we made our way to Zierikzee. We really liked the small town with its great houses. We can recommend the cozy restaurant De Zeeuwse Hemel at Melkmarkt 8, which is very rustically furnished.

Today was planned to explore the beautiful Zierikzee. When it started, I thought about it, what clothes would you take with you and what would you wear??? A lot of dark clouds! Long sleeves on and all-weather jacket packed. Might rain. Everything was to be very different. First of all, hit the best paths again, oh shit..., there are only …

The route was due to the strong north wind. While we were there, we also did some shopping at the cheese farmer and at Jumbo. 😙
