Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

The banks of the Saône offer a very pleasant setting for cycling. Today, the towpaths are perfectly suited for two-wheelers, as seen here.

Verdun-Ciel

Highlight • Settlement

Pleasant town at the confluence of the two rivers Doubs and Saône, with a lively farmers market on the central square on Thursdays. The canal du Rhône au Rhin, which follows the Doubs from the Rhine river, already leaves the Doubs a long way earlier and joins the larger Saône some 40 km upstream from here. Likewise, from Saint-Jean-de-Losne to the South the trail follows the canal along the much wider stream of the Saône. The EuroVelo 6 route crosses much larger bridges when weaving between the left and right banks from here on south.

July 26, 2024,Fahrradtour von St. Jean-sur-Losne nach Gergy bei Chalon-sur-Saône /8. Etappe
Today we had a very hot tour, partly over wide fields, through tiny villages and then to the mouth of the Doubs in Verdun-sur-Doubs. At a wonderful rest stop on the Doubs, a pig came running towards us. Shortly before Gergy at the Super U, I ripped off the fork of my glasses. The optician in Gergy glued them back …

Our destination today is not far from Taizé—my happy place. Since it doesn't really make sense to spend half a day there, we'll continue east on the V50 toward Tournus tomorrow. Today, the sun hit us hard from midday onward. The route was easy to ride, and entering Burgundy also provided more rest stops. A beautiful day's ride with my …

Stayed at Hotel Des Jacobines-cheap, room ok, well placed in centre
Third day, the weather is awful, no risk of sunburn. We even had to wear extra layers, gloves, a neck warmer, and a hat under our helmets.
We escaped the rain and ate at a restaurant to warm up.
Long day
