Searching for Utopia by Jan Fabre

Highlight • Monument

One of his most famous works of art, Utopia or the "tortoise" by Jan Fabre in the vernacular, is a real eye-catcher in Nieuwpoort-Bad.

Old Marina

Highlight • Structure

Upstream from the fishing port of Nieuwpoort is the “Euro Marina”. The three yacht clubs manage around 2,000 berths. Nieuwpoort thus has the largest marina in Northern Europe.

I Can Hear It sculpture, Westende

Highlight • Monument

Artist: Ivars Drulle
I Can Hear It consists of two horns (similar to an old gramophone) that face the sea. A woman sits on a bench in front of it and listens. You can sit next to them and listen to the second horn. The installation captivates with numerous details (the clothes of the woman, the studs of the horns, etc.) that recall the Art Nouveau style of the Hotel Bellevue and a time when the coast was still a glamorous leisure area.

Belgian Sandy Beaches

Highlight • Beach

On the 65 km long sandy coast are 15 beach resorts, all with their own character and a unique atmosphere. The sandy beaches are a paradise for the kids. The beach drops gently to the sea, and everywhere a rescue station is ready to help the bathers - if necessary. Sunbathers have discovered that iodine and salt in the air protect their skin more than the sun's heat in southern Europe.

Delvoye's 'Caterpillar series' dates from 2002. With this collection of remarkable construction machines, Delvoye forges a timeless melting point between the past and the present. It used to take centuries to build a Gothic cathedral, while now a spectacular building is built in no time. The contrast between the sturdy and rough appearance of the corten steel construction and the refined Gothic patterns is astonishing.

Nieuwpoort Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The lighthouse, built from 1922 and subsequently destroyed by the Germans in 1944, served as an example for the current building. The lens system of the previous tower, preserved in Paris, was mounted in the new construction. Originally the tower was lit by a gas lamp. The lens system was set in motion by a decreasing weight that had to be picked up manually each time. The tower was later fitted with an electric light installation. An electric motor was also installed that rotated the optical system. The gas lamp and weight system remained for a while as a back-up. The tower was manned from 1946 until the automation in 1963. The lighthouse keeper lived with his family in a detached house with an annex at the lighthouse from December 1, 1948 to October 1, 1963. He was not only responsible for the proper functioning of the tower, but also operated the foghorn and harbor light at the far end of the eastern pier.

June 14, 2023,🇧🇪 Ausflug nach Nieuwpoort
Today we went south to Nieuwpoort. Actually, I wanted to cross the river Havengeul to Nieuwpoort with the ferry for pedestrians and cyclists. But it didn't drive today, for whatever reason 🤷🏼‍♀️.
So there was "only" something cool to drink in the marina of Nieuwpoort.
The remains of the Atlantic Wall were interesting on the way, who cares 🤓
