Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia), Gdańsk

Highlight • Historical Site

The Great Armoury (Polish: Wielka Zbrojownia) in Gdańsk was built between 1600 and 1609 and was probably designed by the architect Anton van Obberghen.

Table of Contents

The armory, which served as a weapons storehouse, is a typical example of Flemish Mannerism in Gdańsk. The facade on both sides of the building is divided into gables: four on the Holzmarkt (Wood Market) and two on the eastern side facing Jopengasse. Two towers flank the gables. The tips of the gables are decorated with bronze sculptures of exploding cannonballs, clearly indicating the building's purpose.[1] Two portals bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk are symmetrically integrated into the gables on either side. A niche forms the central element of the facade, containing a statue of Athena. In this niche, the builders inscribed the dates of construction and renovation (1605, 1768, 1887).

In front of the building is a well that was connected to the armory in the basement.

The armory's rooms are now used by the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. From the 1920s until about 2007, the ground floor also housed shops.

Old Town of Gdańsk

Highlight • Historical Site

The Old Town in Gdańsk is one of the most picturesque places in Poland, full of monuments, atmospheric streets and a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The most impressive is Długi Targ with the Neptune Fountain, the Main Town Hall and colourful tenement houses. It is also worth visiting Żuraw – a former port crane on the Motława River – and Mariacka Street, known for its amber gallery and cobblestone surface. Cyclists should be careful due to the numerous pedestrian promenades and cobblestones. It is best to visit in the morning or off-season to avoid crowds.

May 18, 2024,Coffee Race ☕ Trójmiasto by night 2024
Second coffee race in my life, this time a night edition in Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia Tricity. We didn't use GPS suggestions too much rather relying on Gdańsk-based friend and it turned out so well, it's a way better road away from the sea in the crowded times.
Day 13
Today, with Niko and 11 cyclists, we went on a guided tri-city e-bike tour 😀 from Gdynia (Gdingen) via Sopot (Zoppot) with the goal of visiting the Hanseatic city of Gdańsk (Danzig) and back again in 24 degrees and ☀️.

We cycled 54 km and walked the remaining kilometers in Gdańsk.
