Olmsted Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

Olmsted Point is a famous viewpoint of the north side of Half Dome, Tenaya Canyon, and Tenaya Lake to the east from Tioga Pass off State Highway 120 in Mariposa County. Olmsted Point is a must-see on the way over Tioga Pass. We admire the "erratic" boulders staggered around the granite slopes. These huge boulders were left behind when the last glacier broke through. Olmsted Point is named after landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Olmsted was instrumental in protecting Yosemite National Park in the 1860s when he worked with Senator John Conness of California to declare Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove as public land under state protection. This was the first land set aside by Congress for public use and laid the foundation for what would become the National Parks.

Tenaya Lake Beach

Highlight • Beach

Tenaya Lake one of the easiest accessible and most beautiful alpine lakes in Yosemite National Park, Located between Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows there are very short trails from the parking lots or road side pull offs to reach it's shore and beaches. The surface of Tenaya Lake has an elevation of 8,150 feet (2,484 m). The lake basin was formed by glacial action, which left a backdrop of light granite rocks, whose beauty was known to the Native Americans. Today, Tenaya Lake is easily accessible by Tioga Pass Road (State Route 120) and is a popular lake for water activities. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenaya_Lake

This is where the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail crosses the Tioga Road. Most of the thruhikers walk to Tuolumne Meadows Store & Grill to get a resupply, eat well and often pickup a resupply package. There is also a campground close by.

NOTE: Tuolumne Meadows Campground will be closed until 2024 or 2025 due to reconstruction. The backpackers campground will also be closed. This might very well affect the store and nearby post office that will likely be closed, too. To resupply, you can take the bus into Lee Vining or Yosemite Valley from mid June through mid September.
