September 14, 2025,🇲🇫 Basel -Orleans - Tag 12: von Sancerre nach Sully-sur-Loire
The historical buildings we encountered on our tour today are, for once, not churches, but technical structures that serve the usability of the canals.

First, there was the historic Mantelot Lock. Built between 1833 and 1838, it allowed ships to continue their journeys into the canal. It also housed a boat station. A dam-built canal in the Loire allowed boatmen …

Then came the "Chanel de Briare," a former shipping canal (1890-1894) that crosses the Loire. A canal already existed before this. It's very impressive, and today cyclists can also use …

After the descent from Sancerre over a long old bridge, then very flat, but unfortunately still (west) windy. That was tiring, also for the bottom. So today I made a decision: I'm going to treat myself to a Brooks. Also today: saw the first large castle up close - Château de Sully.

Oh 😳 what a work stage! The north wind blows mercilessly in our faces. The hands are frost red from the chill factor at just 8 degrees! So put on gloves and a windbreaker! 😠

The first 30 km we accelerate to warm up. Then the sun comes out and we make breakfast with hot tea!

Today's route ran from Sancerre to Sully-sur-Loire along the Loire Way (EV6). A highlight was the viaduct "Ligne de Saint-Germain-du-Puy a Cosne" at Saint-Sature and the Pont-Canal de Briare.

This time the path led us through smaller villages, including the medieval town of Saint-Gondon.
