The Danevirke is the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe. It was used and expanded from the Early Middle Ages to the High Middle Ages over a period of around 700 years. In the 19th century it was reactivated by the Danish military during the German-Danish wars.

The starting point is the free 'Danewerk car park' at the Danewerk Museum. The part west of the through road to the Danewerk-Schanze is largely at ground level and without stairs, i.e. barrier-free. The hike can be extended southwest from the Danewerk ski jump.
