The Thyraburg was probably a wooden Wallburg from the early Middle Ages and thus a part of Danewerks. For the construction of the castle an artificial plateau of 45 meters in length and 35 meters in width was created, which is still preserved today. From the castle, however, there are no remains.

The Thyrabrug forms a strategic corner in the defense system of the Danewerk, at which the Dannewerker See as a natural obstacle connected the main and connecting walls with the castle. The age and exact function of the system are unknown. The Thyraburg is located at the northeastern end of the main wall of the Danewerk on the bank of the former Dannewerker See, which is now just a damp hollow. The name Thyraburg may have been derived from Queen Thyra Danebod. Thyra lived in the 10th century and was the mother of Harald Blauzahn and wife of Gorm, the Danish kings of Jelling. However, excavations have revealed that the complex seems to be even older.

        The castle complex
The "Thyraburg" is located at a strategic corner point of the Danewerk. The rectangular plateau is at the end of the main wall and connects to the lowland of Lake Dannewerk. He landed today. Do you see the former lake shore in the landscape? The builders of the Danewerk cleverly included the lake as a natural obstacle. The north wall and connecting wall meet on the other bank.
The main wall near this point could be dated to the year 737 AD, so it existed before the Viking Age. However, the age of the castle is unknown.

Later she was named after Queen Thyra Danebod. Thyra was the mother of Harald Bluetooth and wife of Gorm, the Danish kings of Jelling. Possibly there was some kind of fortification on the Thyraburg. A ditch and a flat outer wall secured the system on the three land sides. However, no finds from the Viking Age came to light. The importance of the Thyraburg for the Danewerk remains a mystery.
