Hıdırlık Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

The Hidirlik Tower dates back to the 2nd century AD during the Roman Imperial period, when Antalya was known as Attaleia. While historians debate its original function, most evidence suggests that it was first built as a monumental tomb for a prominent Roman consul, possibly M. Calpurnius Rufus or M. Petronius Umbrinus.

The tower's structure reflects classical Roman engineering, with a square lower level and a cylindrical superstructure. Six fasces reliefs (symbolic objects carried by Roman lictors) can be seen on either side of the lower entrance door, confirming its Roman origins.

During the Byzantine period (5th–6th centuries AD), the tower underwent a significant transformation. It was incorporated into the city's defensive wall system and used as a lighthouse to guide ships safely into Antalya's harbor. This dual function as a defensive structure and navigational aid underscores its strategic importance.

Over the centuries, the Hidirlik Tower has served a variety of purposes. During the Seljuk period, it served as a pavilion, and later the Ottomans used it as a military warehouse and watchtower to monitor shipping in the Gulf of Antalya. This diversity of functions across different civilizations makes it a fascinating example of architectural adaptation.

Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar), Antalya

Highlight • Historical Site

The Hadrian's Gate is one of Antalya's oldest buildings and was built in the first half of the 2nd century on the occasion of a visit by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Presumably, it is also so well preserved because it was later integrated as a city gate in the medieval city wall. In addition to the three archways, the deeply ground ruts of the old oxcart are literally impressive.

Beautiful view of the old port of Antalya directly below. The two billy goats made of wooden parts that attack each other are very expressive.

Kaleiçi is the oldest district of Antalya and consists of the ancient city area, which was enclosed inside and out by city walls shaped like a horseshoe. Unfortunately, most of these walls have now collapsed or no longer exist. The city walls, which encircled the harbor and the ancient city area surrounding it, were built in the 2nd century and are a joint work of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman eras. They were fortified with numerous towers. There were also walls separating the settlements within the city.

Gathered some last impressions and ticked a few boxes off the list... toured a mosque, shopped for sweets, checked out a Sufi mosque (museum), took the elevator from town to the port, had a bite to eat in the sun overlooking the sea and drank a good mocha with cocoa.

Today we took a taxi to Antalya. We explored the harbor and the old town.
The many bazaars and alleyways were very impressive. No one was pushy, and we were able to see everything, which was a lot of fun 😍
