Antalya's first city wall, dating from the Hellenistic period, was expanded in the 2nd century under Roman rule. Hadrian's Gate still stands from this structure today. In the 10th century, the Byzantine ruler commissioned the construction of a second wall, and in the 13th century, the Seljuks renovated it.

Kaleiçi is the oldest district of Antalya and consists of the ancient city area, which was enclosed inside and out by city walls shaped like a horseshoe. Unfortunately, most of these walls have now collapsed or no longer exist. The city walls, which encircled the harbor and the ancient city area surrounding it, were built in the 2nd century and are a joint work of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman eras. They were fortified with numerous towers. There were also walls separating the settlements within the city.
