The Hidirlik Tower dates back to the 2nd century AD during the Roman Imperial period, when Antalya was known as Attaleia. While historians debate its original function, most evidence suggests that it was first built as a monumental tomb for a prominent Roman consul, possibly M. Calpurnius Rufus or M. Petronius Umbrinus.

The tower's structure reflects classical Roman engineering, with a square lower level and a cylindrical superstructure. Six fasces reliefs (symbolic objects carried by Roman lictors) can be seen on either side of the lower entrance door, confirming its Roman origins.

During the Byzantine period (5th–6th centuries AD), the tower underwent a significant transformation. It was incorporated into the city's defensive wall system and used as a lighthouse to guide ships safely into Antalya's harbor. This dual function as a defensive structure and navigational aid underscores its strategic importance.

Over the centuries, the Hidirlik Tower has served a variety of purposes. During the Seljuk period, it served as a pavilion, and later the Ottomans used it as a military warehouse and watchtower to monitor shipping in the Gulf of Antalya. This diversity of functions across different civilizations makes it a fascinating example of architectural adaptation.
