French Tower (Tour de France), Rhodes Harbour

Highlight • Castle

This imposing defence construction at the medieval harbour of Rhodes dates from 1451. As many as 13 windmills had reportedly functioned in this area at the time of the Knightly rule, catering to the needs of the city. Works on the development of this particular construction were originally commissioned by Grand Master Jean de Lastic (1437-1454), using funds contributed partly by the local Jewish community and the King of France – possibly Louis XI, judging from a blazon featured on the tower’s façade. The original outlook and structure of the tower and the bastion are now gone, altered forever in the wake of modifications commissioned by Grand Master d’Aubusson, in the aftermath of the Ottoman siege of 1480 as well as under the effect of posterior reinstatement works carried about the bastion.

Church of the Virgin of the Burgh Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

The ruins of this Gothic Roman Catholic church are inside the medieval town, near the Gate of the Virgin. The church dates from the 14th century and was most likely one of the first buildings erected by the knights. During the Turkish occupation of Rhodes, the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque. Not much remains today due to the bombings of World War II. Only the three apses and parts of the small chapel have survived. However, it is an important monument as there are few other Roman Catholic churches from this period left on the islands. Fun Fact: The name "Burgh" comes from the commoners (as opposed to the knights) who inhabited this part of town

Owl Fountain, Hippocrates Square

Highlight • Monument

The Ippokratou Square with its owl fountain and the many restaurants is an imposing square that you should definitely enter through the Thalassini Gate. From here, paths lead in all directions of the old town. There we ate a very good, award-winning ice cream, which is really recommendable :) (Enter through the gate mentioned, towards the fountain and then keep left)

A sculpture featuring four bottlenose dolphins is located at the head of the Mandraki Harbor of Rhodes just outside the walls of the old town.

A pod of four bottlenose dolphins are depicted in the act of leaping out of the water. The dolphins are displayed on a seven foot high natural rock formation next to the rocky shore of Mandraki Harbor. They are raised above the rock on a four-armed bronze base.

A stone plaque set into the rock is inscribed:

C. NEOFITOU
