Moorkuhlen, Neustädter Moor

Highlight • Natural

The peat pits are sites of former manual peat cutting. The steep edges are flattened to prevent them from becoming deadly traps for animals.

The second observation tower on the Neustädter Moor. Quiet area with lots of new garden benches next to the tower. The old train lines are still there. On many bogs peat is transported with such small trains.

Asked Komoot and got a hot tip: the Schnuckenweg in Neustädter Moor near Ströhen. Our expectations: yes, take a look. And what was there ... a great tour. Discovery trails through the moor, mud battles in the moor 😅, dune and forest paths, observation towers and railroad tracks. Nothing before tomorrow ?! Go this way and continue our mud fight …

This hike is always beautiful! The heather is in bloom, the cotton grass is shedding its wool. Sundew grows abundantly in one spot.

...we haven't had one for a long time, most recently almost 24 hours ago.
But this time it wasn't the Südlohner Moor, nor the Aschener, Goldenstedter, Diepholzer or where else we usually hang out. No, since I had things to do in Wagenfeld, I took the opportunity to go from Ströhen to the Neustädter Moor.
You can't get really deep …

...no, not a drinking spree. Damp because the paths were partly well watered and it wasn't without getting my feet wet, and happy because I didn't let it spoil my wonderful hiking mood. At least there was a bright blue sky and a fresh wind was blowing.

Some time ago the moor was still swimming away! It's still green now, the common heather is beginning to bloom, bell heather is still visible, rosemary heather will bloom later.
A wonderful atmosphere accompanies us. A flock of sheep is bleating in the distance, birds are chirping, sometimes you can hear a crane.
The views from the lookout towers are …

Lots of water, always water. Some paths are impassable. The moor fulfils its mission of protecting the climate.
Small flowers on the rosemary heath delight the heart. Benches and the two towers invite you to linger. You can hear cranes, but you can't see them.

So much water in the moor...the moor pad has been redesigned. The "Moorglü"...a will-o'-the-wisp explains the moor...a gain for the path.

Showing Translation

What is happening in the moors? Less and less water...the peat mosses are growing but the waterholes have fallen, dried up...
