Very nice, partly steep hike. From Funchal with line 56 to Riberio Frio, back with line 53 from Portela to Funchal. Be careful, the taxi driver lures you with a ride to Funchal, down the stairs on the right behind the taxi rank the bus goes to Funchal 😆

Every hiking guide speaks highly of this tour... and that's true!

More about this in the also posted summary of my hike(s) today.

This footpath, which follows one of the oldest public levadas on the island, is 11 km long and has an estimated walking time of 5 hours. The PR 10 Levada do Furado begins in Ribeira Grande, in the municipality of Santana, and allows you to contemplate the various shades of green of the laurel forest.

Today is our last hike on Madeira. We specifically chose a day when the tour operators weren't offering any tours there.
So we took a taxi to Ribeiro Frio and then continued along the levada to Patela.
It was wonderful; we only passed people three times. No one in front of us and no one behind us, just nature. 😊🙋🏻🙋🏼‍♂️

This tour would have been 11 km long and the return journey would have been by taxi, but after about 7.5 km the path ended because the slope had slipped. It was still nice

This levada path begins in the idyllic valley of Ribeiro Frio, which is initially rather unspectacular. But soon there is a beautiful view down into the valley and nice extras such as small waterfalls and seepage walls overgrown with ferns and moss. Many short tunnels and the beautiful mini levada at the end make the whole tour extraordinary👌. Since we …

The entry point is at the trout farm. An impressive levada right from the start. Sturdy footwear is a must here, as some of the paths are very slippery. The view is so magnificent that you don't know where to look.
The vegetation is lush, and in places I had to negotiate larger boulders. On some sections, you have to …

One of the most beautiful tours of our vacation. Maybe a little crowded but worth it. Arrival from Funchal to Ribero Frio by bus 56. Return from Portela to Funchal by bus 53 or shared taxi (usually €5/person)
