Levada do Furado

Simply follow the levada to the Ribeira do Poço do Bozerro levada bridge. A steep climb branches off here.

This spectacular hike through primeval forests and along cliffs starts in Ribeiro Frio. (From here, you could also take a 25-minute easy hike to the Balcoes viewpoint.) The Levada do Furado, one of the oldest waterways, leads to Portela. There, you can stop for refreshments at an inn and then take a taxi back. The 11 km (7.2 miles) trail initially descends gently, then descends steeply for a short stretch, partly on stairs. You pass rock tunnels, small waterfalls, enjoy frequent glimpses of Madeira's highest peaks, and hike through a narrow crevice. The path then becomes more exposed and narrow, but is protected throughout. Of course, you should be sure-footed and have a head for heights.
