The descent from the Levada dos Tornos is very steep and not for inexperienced feet or shaky footwear. In the valley you can then cross the small river and take a staircase up to Levada Nova. A great view and probably lonely hiking pleasure offers this stretch of road. Then it goes very steep on a paved road uphill and via Santa do Serra back to the starting point of the holiday village on stilts: Quinta das Eiras.

The hike on the Ribeiro frio lives up to its name. Warmth
Clothes and rain gear should be there. You should also wear sturdy shoes, the paths can be very muddy. In Portela are only the taxis. There is also a bus stop, which does not lead to Funchal. You have to go down stairs. The taxi drivers but make pretty good deals, so you get much faster to Funchal.

The viewpoint is inevitably passed on the hike from Ribeiro Frio to Portela. This leads for long stretches through densely forested areas and slopes. In a few places you can catch glimpses of the mountains and the valley, as here. These are all the more beautiful!

Portela is the apex of the north and south coast, the weather is quite changeable here. As Thorsten already recommends ... take suitable clothes with you 👍🏼 I also had good experience with the taxis. It was raining, the taxi driver had already seen us and came up to the hiking path 😂👌🏼
