Krakow Barbican

Highlight • Historical Site

When I first saw the Barbican, the lowest level was not visible. The moat had been filled in.

Now, however, it is quite clear that this bulwark consists of four levels. It was extensively renovated in the 1990s, and the moat was partially excavated.

The Barbican can be visited daily. Admission costs 12 zloty (as of 2021).

Note: The admission price also includes a visit to St. Florian's Gate and the defensive tunnels.

The entrance can be found by going from the Barbican through St. Florian's Gate and then turning left to the next defensive tower.

The Barbican was built of brick in 1498 and 1499. The south side of Krakow has always been well protected by Wawel Castle, but in the late 15th century, the city wanted to better protect St. Florian's Gate on the north side, which has clearly paid off. This allowed the Habsburgs and the Swedes to be repelled.
