Aylvapoldermolen (Burgwerd)

Today's Aylvapoldermolen was built in Hallum in 1846. This was known as the Vijfhuistermolen or Hoekstermolen. The mill was restored again in 1964 and 1971. On May 4, 1976, it was sold to Stichting. In 1989 the Stichting Aylvapoldermolen was founded to rebuild a windmill on the site of the lost mill. In 1996 it was suggested that the Vijfhuistermolen must be a suitable candidate to replace it because the land it stood on was needed for the expansion of a company in Hallum. The mill was dismantled in 1999 and rebuilt in Burgwerd on the site of the original Aylvapoldermolen. The official opening ceremony was performed on June 3rd, 2009 by Ms. Annemarie Jorritsma, then Minister of Economy of Zaken. Mrs. Jorritsma is the daughter of a miller. On August 20, 2009, the mill was struck by lightning and set on fire. The fire brigade was able to confine the damage to the jerking on the cap. The mill is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system. Firefighters used 135,000 liters of water to extinguish the fire. About 6 square meters of thatch were destroyed. Source; Wikipedia
