Aylvapoldermolen (Burgwerd)

Highlight • Monument

The first mill on this site was a smock mill built in 1827. The mill was known as Molen van de Tjaard. It drained the Aylvapolder, the first polder established in Friesland in 1680. On November 9, 1959, the mill was burned down.

Today's Aylvapoldermolen was built in Hallum in 1846. This was known as the Vijfhuistermolen or Hoekstermolen. The mill was restored again in 1964 and 1971. On May 4, 1976, it was sold to Stichting. In 1989 the Stichting Aylvapoldermolen was founded to rebuild a windmill on the site of the lost mill. In 1996 it was suggested that the Vijfhuistermolen must be a suitable candidate to replace it because the land it stood on was needed for the expansion of a company in Hallum. The mill was dismantled in 1999 and rebuilt in Burgwerd on the site of the original Aylvapoldermolen. The official opening ceremony was performed on June 3rd, 2009 by Ms. Annemarie Jorritsma, then Minister of Economy of Zaken. Mrs. Jorritsma is the daughter of a miller. On August 20, 2009, the mill was struck by lightning and set on fire. The fire brigade was able to confine the damage to the jerking on the cap. The mill is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system. Firefighters used 135,000 liters of water to extinguish the fire. About 6 square meters of thatch were destroyed. Source; Wikipedia

Bolsward Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Bolsward Town Hall is one of Friesland's most beautiful gems. Museum De Tiid, housed in the former town hall, showcases the fascinating history of Southwest Friesland. Take your time for the interactive presentations and marvel at the photogenic council chamber, the balcony, and the tower attic.

Bolsward became really wealthy in the 17th century through the milk trade. You can see this well in the houses along the city canals of that time. You can admire outstanding canal houses with facades in baroque, rococo and neoclassical style on the Appelmarkt and the Marktstraat. On the longest canal called the Dijl with the large Dijlakker and the small Dijlakker on either side you will find beautiful molded facades, a beautiful neck gable and a number of simple stepped gables as well as a beautifully decorated version. In summer you should take the tour boat through the historic canals. Text: VVV Waterland
