Harlingen is located directly on the North Sea. Ferry connections to the Dutch islands. Very nice old town to stroll, many cafes. Locks and harbor for "visual people". Canals and old warehouses.

Nice harbor town with many nice cafes and a beautiful shopping street. The train regularly brings tourists to take the ferry to the West Frisian Islands. Harlingen was once a major port on the North Sea and was also a member of the Hanseatic League.

Formerly, the place was more western, but the sea tore land several times, so that the place slowly shifted. 1543 and 1565 made extensions to the north, which made the Noorderhafen to the inland port. In 1574, on the orders of the governor, the Duke of Alba, Caspar de Robles, the dikes on the Frisian coast had to be increased (Wikipedia).
