5월 13, 2025, Old Schalkenmehren Train Station
"Old Station" Schalkenmehren Passenger service between Daun and Wittlich was discontinued on November 1, 1981. Schalkenmehren. Approaching the Old Station in Schalkenmehren on the former railway line, today's Maare-Mosel cycle path, and seeing the station building, it's hard to believe that it was opened as a fourth-class railway station exactly 100 years ago. But how did it all begin 100 years ago? Surveying for the Daun-Wittlich railway line began as early as 1897. General preparatory work for the single-track line began in 1907. But it would take some time before the Daun-Schalkenmehren-Gillenfeld section opened on December 1, 1909, with the line running over the 28-meter-high Daun viaduct and through the 560-meter-long Schalkenmehren railway tunnel, "Großes Schlitzohr" (Great Sly Fox). The extension from Gillenfeld to Manderscheid to Pantenburg was completed on May 1, 1910, and the extension from Manderscheid-Pantenburg to Wittlich, signifying the completion of the entire line, was completed on July 1, 1910. The completion of the Daun-Wittlich railway line brought rapid development to the village of Schalkenmehren. In the first year of the line's existence (1910), 18,968 tickets were sold in Schalkenmehren, followed by 25,057 in 1913, 27,969 in 1919, and even 30,279 in 1922. In addition, Schalkenmehren station was designed for general cargo traffic and the receipt and dispatch of wagonloads. 3월 10, 2025, View of Schalkenmehrener Maar
From the hills around the Schalkenmehrener Maar you have different views of the village and the almost circular water surface. One view is more beautiful than the other. Sometimes you see the St. Martin Church reflected in the water, or you can see a dry maar or the adjacent maar with fen.

9월 16, 2024, View of Niederburg Castle
The Niederburg can be explored with guided tours - even at night - or on your own; it is only closed in bad weather. It was expanded into a magnificent, fortified seat of power in the 12th century by the noble family of the Lords of Manderscheid. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-manderscheider-burgen

9월 2, 2024, View of Schalkenmehrener Maar
From here you have a great view of the Schalkenmehrener Maar. It is one of the three Dauner Maars and if you look closely you can see that it was once a double maar that was formed by volcanic activity around 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. However, the tuff of the western maar filled the eastern maar funnel, so that today all that remains of the second maar is the fen vegetation in this area.

The Lieserpfad offers some beautiful, albeit short, trails. This one is one of the longer ones. It is quite flowing with little gradient. I actually had fewer stones.

The cold water geyser bubbles approximately every 30 minutes. The fountain is then approximately 2 m high 😎

10월 10, 2023, St. Donatus-Kapelle Gemünden
The Donatus Chapel in the Gemünden district of Daun was built in 1713, even if the sign or other publications claim 1731. At that time, from an ecclesiastical perspective, Gemünden was entirely part of the Archdiocese of Cologne. And as is still customary today, the episcopal authorities sent clerical administrative officers (visitors) to the parishes at regular intervals to check and inspect what was going on. A report was then written about it. And in. Cologne Diocesan Archives contain a note under the year 1716 that an oratory (=place of worship) was built in Gemünden under Pastor Faber before 1716 with the help of the neighbors. This confirms the assumption that the chapel was built in 1713.

10월 2, 2023, Kobeslochhütte – View of Liesertal
If you want to enjoy a very personal view, you can take a small, secured steep path to the left of the hut to the actual Kobesloch. The path is not long, but you should be sure-footed and not afraid of heights. A must for climbing enthusiasts.
