The Niederburg can be explored with guided tours - even at night - or on your own; it is only closed in bad weather. It was expanded into a magnificent, fortified seat of power in the 12th century by the noble family of the Lords of Manderscheid.

The Niederburg was first mentioned in a document in 1173. It was ruled by the Counts of Manderscheid, who were an important noble family in the Middle Ages. The castle, which was initially manageable, was continually enlarged and developed into an imposing manorial residence with impressive fortifications. In 1794 the lower castle followed the fate of the upper castle: French troops destroyed the historic walls and left a ruin behind. The Eifelverein has owned the castle since 1899, and it has only belonged to the city of Manderscheid since 2018.

"... The health resort of Manderscheid is particularly famous for two medieval castle ruins, which stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the town's streets. The once massive complexes, which were destroyed in several warlike turmoil in the 17th century, are only separated by the small river Lieser , which carves a spirited path through the densely wooded rocky landscape in the valley. A meadow stretches between the castles, which - equipped with a barbecue hut - is a perfect place in summer for a breather while hiking on the Eifelsteig or for a family picnic with children becomes.

From here you have a wonderful view of the two Manderscheid castles.
The Lower Castle, which lies on a rock below the Upper Castle, was destroyed by the French around 1800 and has been continuously restored by the Eifel Association since 1899. Walls, towers, stairs and exits can again be explored on a tour today.

Beautiful view of the castles which are the best camouflaged castles in my opinion. Both castles can hardly be seen from the village of Manderscheid, although they are quite powerful, impressive and unusual. Highly recommended.
