June 24, 2025 / The lakeside bistro has been closed since 2024. The nearest options for food and drink are at the outdoor pool, when it's open, or at the Pulvermaar holiday village on the opposite crater rim. Further away alternatives include Gillenfeld or the Janshen poultry farm in Ellscheid.

5월 13, 2025, Old Schalkenmehren Train Station
"Old Station" Schalkenmehren Passenger service between Daun and Wittlich was discontinued on November 1, 1981. Schalkenmehren. Approaching the Old Station in Schalkenmehren on the former railway line, today's Maare-Mosel cycle path, and seeing the station building, it's hard to believe that it was opened as a fourth-class railway station exactly 100 years ago. But how did it all begin 100 years ago? Surveying for the Daun-Wittlich railway line began as early as 1897. General preparatory work for the single-track line began in 1907. But it would take some time before the Daun-Schalkenmehren-Gillenfeld section opened on December 1, 1909, with the line running over the 28-meter-high Daun viaduct and through the 560-meter-long Schalkenmehren railway tunnel, "Großes Schlitzohr" (Great Sly Fox). The extension from Gillenfeld to Manderscheid to Pantenburg was completed on May 1, 1910, and the extension from Manderscheid-Pantenburg to Wittlich, signifying the completion of the entire line, was completed on July 1, 1910. The completion of the Daun-Wittlich railway line brought rapid development to the village of Schalkenmehren. In the first year of the line's existence (1910), 18,968 tickets were sold in Schalkenmehren, followed by 25,057 in 1913, 27,969 in 1919, and even 30,279 in 1922. In addition, Schalkenmehren station was designed for general cargo traffic and the receipt and dispatch of wagonloads. 5월 12, 2024, Hermes Wayside Cross
The Hermes wayside cross stands on the former path from Schalkenmehren - Udler at a height of 495 m above sea level. Baroque cross with altar projection, roof-like ornamental pieces on the shaft base, the front surface and on both sides. Shaft at the bottom with a belly-like extension and foliage. The inscription reads: (no longer legible today) "ANNO 1713 JOANNS HERMES". Here too, above the inscription, a Pietá carved out of the stone." (Source: Schalkenmehren - Chronicle of the Maardorf p. 322/223) - Basis: the recording and recording of the crosses by Roland Thelen, Mehren, in 1980 "R. Thelen, Sacred Small Monuments, 2001". On the way to Udler, 2 km from Schalkenmehren, there is a similar cross at a fork in the road, also without a top, carved from red sandstone and heavily weathered. It looks towards Mehren. 5월 12, 2024, Mittelweiher Restoration Area
For birds, it is an important resting and resting place with the nearby Sangweiher and Jungferweiher. Around 1400, the Electors of Trier created three fish ponds in this area, with the Mürmes-Maar being used as the uppermost pond. Between 1800 and 1950, the local population was able to cut peat because the dam had been destroyed and the water was draining away. The 43-hectare nature reserve has been protected since 1978. 22 hectares belong to the NABU Daun, and the Vulkaneifel district owns 21 hectares. Since then, the moor has been re-wetted in a controlled manner using a new discharge barrier and thus renaturalized.

The Pulvermaar in the Vulkaneifel southeast of Daun is a water-filled maar whose almost circular lake is, despite its small area of around 38.48 hectares, one of the deepest in Germany at 72 meters. Like the smaller Holzmaar, it is part of the Gillenfelder Maaren. Beautiful hiking trails and nature.

The Pulvermaar in the Vulkaneifel southeast of Daun in Rhineland-Palatinate is a water-filled, almost circular maar lake and, despite its small area of around 38.48 hectares, is one of the deepest lakes in Germany at 72 meters. Like the Holzmaar, it belongs to the Gillenfelder Maaren. The Pulvermaar is one of the ten deepest lakes in Germany, only Lake Constance and a few Bavarian lakes (Königssee, Walchensee, Starnberger See and Ammersee) are significantly deeper. The original depth of the funnel created by the phreatomagmatic explosion is estimated to be around 200 m, with a surrounding wall of ejected material approximately 50 m high.

If you drive towards it and the light in the tunnel is off: The light in the tunnels comes on automatically via a motion detector ;-)

Circular in shape, deep blue water and unfathomably deep, that is the Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld. It is one of the best known and most popular maars because you can go swimming here in summer. Slide, diving tower and children's pool ensure summer bathing fun. Or you can rent one of the rowing boats and do laps across the calm waters It was created around 23,000 years ago by volcanic activity. With a water depth of around 74 meters, it is the deepest maar in the Eifel and is particularly impressive due to its almost circular funnel completely filled with water - one of the "eyes of the Eifel"

Mürmes The Electors' Maar Mürmes is located in the nature reserve of the same name and is an oval moor with four meter thick layers of peat. Rare plants with evocative names grow on its surface, such as the narrow-leaved cotton grass, the round-leaved sundew, the hairy water fennel, the ivy-leaved buttercup and the spotted orchid.
