Borgharen (Limburgish: Hare) and Itteren are two small church villages located on the northern edge of the municipality of Maastricht. Both villages have a long history, partly due to the castles of Borharen and Hartelstein, which have played an important role in the region since the Middle Ages. In 2010, a unique mass grave with horses from the 16th or 17th century was discovered during excavation work at the Oostelijke Rug between Spekstraat and Pasestraat in Borgharen. The remains found are those of at least 69 horses. It is suspected that the horses were killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1632, or the French siege by Louis XIV of France in 1673. Both Borgharen and Itteren suffered extreme high water in 1926, 1993 and 1995.

The river MEAS is so dominant for the city, an early Roman settlement, that the name of the 874-kilometer-long river, whose source is in France, also shaped the city name: Maastricht.
